Dear Frankfort Square Park District Residents:
The fall brochure report historically provides summaries of new facilities that were completed during the summer construction season. This year is no exception, and in the coming months, a new park will be completed in the Lighthouse Pointe subdivision.
The Frankfort Square Park District was fortunate to receive full grant funding for this improvement through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The park district has actively pursued available grant dollars receiving over $4 million since 1980. Grant funds have allowed the park district to construct facilities far in excess of what normal park funding would have allowed.
We are all aware of the current economic climate, and the park district struggles with the decline in funding from all sources, resulting in the need to prioritize spending. The park district is unwavering in its goal to ensure residents receive the best services possible by providing program offerings and facility maintenance that they have come to expect.
The FSPD exceeds every state and national standard for park property with acres of open space and some very unique facilities, along with the customary amenities such as playgrounds, athletic fields, and native areas.
The park district is also resourceful in its pursuit of a land lease agreement with Summit Hill School District and the Joliet Diocese for the creation of a 39-acre soccer/football park located at 88th Avenue, adjacent to Dr. Julian Rogus Elementary School. Upon completion, this new complex will provide residents with access to eight new full-sized athletic fields.
New this past summer was a summer family concert series at the outdoor bandshell on the Community Center grounds. Entering its second year of existence, the Nature Center and demonstration gardens are taking shape, depicting what will be an outstanding natural landscape. The 9.9 miles of walking path are constantly busy with foot and bike traffic. The outdoor hockey rink, spurred on by the Olympics and Blackhawks Stanley Cup win, is being used by record numbers of skaters and hockey players.
It remains an exciting time in our district. Challenges will force hard choices in the future, but the resources available to the park district continue to present new opportunities for growth.
The Frankfort Square Park District is governed by a seven- member board of residents that contribute their time and talents in providing direction for the park district. Board Members are elected to four-year terms, and 2011 is an election year for three open Board positions. If interested in running for the Park Board, election packets will be available at the park office in October.
The Frankfort Square Park District Board and staff members value the working relationship we have with our residents. Together we have developed programs, facilities, and open space for the betterment of our community. As always, if you have any questions or ideas related to the district, I would encourage you to take the opportunity to contact us via e-mail, mail, attending a Board Meeting, or just pick up the phone. The one thing that can be said about every improvement we enjoy throughout our community is that they all started the same way; a resident had an idea that was presented to the district.
Sincerely,
Jim Randall
Executive Director
